Another TTC employee slacking on the job. TTC driver takes his daily 7 minute, unscheduled break. And when the rider threatened to make a complaint, the driver told him that the union would protect his job. Nice.
I have heard a lot of arguments about this video in the last day or two. There are people saying things like “Everyone needs a break once in a while”… “he has to go to the bathroom we can’t expect him not to go” and even intelligent arguments like
“if the driver of a mass transit vehicle needs a break, I say let him or her have it…the alternative is that a driver tires behind the wheel and is accountable for the lives of his or her passengers.”
My take:
I’m sure even the most conservative of persons has no problem with a transit driver needing to go to the bathroom, or even on occasion needing to stop for a coffee/drink because he is having an extraordinary shift. Everyone has unscheduled events. But this driver allegedly does it everyday.
Like most people, I could not get away with this behaviour at work. TTC/Municipal workers are employed to do a job, and it is time they start behaving like they are on the job, OR fear losing their source of income like the rest of us do.
If the the alternative to this driver taking his daily break is the risk that he may tire and cause injury to his passengers, then maybe he is incapable of doing that job. He should therefore be moved to a position in which he can perform… say the ticket booth where he can take a nap once in a while. I think that is fair considering most people working in the private sector who can’t perform their job functions are simply fired.
I take the TTC everywhere, and I am certain this driver is one of the few exceptions to all the hard-working transit employees out there. But these exceptions, must be held accountable.
