Look at this. Somebody has mapped the average speed of TTC buses and streetcars. Blue is fast, red is slow.
So I get on the 42B Cummer bus at 12:45pm from Finch Subway station on my way to work. Bus number is 1795.
A disabled male in a wheelchair wants to get on. The driver pushes the button to extend the ramp but it doesn’t work. (He didn’t try more than once). He then tells the would be passenger that
“the ramp doesn’t work… Take the next bus”
And bus proceeds to drive off leaving the wheel-chaired passenger in the sweltering heat (50 with humidex)
As we leave Finch terminal another male - also disabled (and it seems the two may have been together) asks
“Why can’t he get on the bus”
The driver replies “the ramp won’t work”
Again the challenged person - who by the way is pretty smart and know that the ramp can be extended manually - asks
“Well why not pull it up?”
The driver gets angry and yells “I have a bad back… I’m not pulling anything up”
The driver did eventually call into control to report that he left the passenger behind. I am not sure that is good enough though.
If in fact the driver has a bad back he should not be sitting in the drivers seat of a bus for several hours at a time.
Besides… He could have easily turned to another passenger such as myself for help in lifting the ramp. Driver gave up and started driving before there was even time for someone to offer.
